Several of my paintings - especially the gouache - were painted whilst on safari in Kenya, Tanzania and Zanzibar.

My husband Charles was born and brought up in Southern Africa, his family being cattle farmers. Our trip to Kenya and Tanzania this year was the culmination of a childhood dream of mine and my husband's longing to see the Africa he remembers as a child.

My fist glimpse of Kenya was as we landed at Nairobi airport with the sight of Acacia trees on the nearby reserve. I found this so moving and was in tears as we landed; I was here after so many years of dreaming!

We camped during most of our trip and as you can see from my photos, painted at any opportunity! I was intoxicated by the atmosphere of the places we visited; the Serengeti, Ngorongoro crater, Lake Naivasha and Lake Nakuru National Park and was especially drawn to the wonderfully friendly people. In spite of the obvious poverty in many of the areas, the people still remain cheerful and friendly calling greetings out as we passed.

Kenyans and Tanzanians dress in the most vibrant colours that look gorgeous against their dark skins and are the focus of several of my painting
s (there are many more to come!).

The Maasi especially, wear wonderful colours and usually drape their robes across one shoulder; many of the colours I have used in the gouache paintings are hot and vibrant just like the Maasi and their country!
